Having had some practice at these mini essays in comparing characters to discuss difference, power and stereotypes I would like you to attempt the mock based on the representation of AGE
This will be a timed exam which you will do from home, the results of which will be entered onto your module reports. I will collect them in during your next TV drama lesson.
Please hand in your notes sheet with MES CAM SOUND EDIT
To prepare for this I would like you to revise the Terminology, Sterotypes and the notes you made on what prediction we could have for how Age is constructed
Review your notes that you have taken and put on your TV drama blogs
What technical aspects can we expect for YOUTH
What technical aspects can we expect for ADULTS
What technical aspects can we expect for ELDERLY
Differences, opposites (quick cuts/ slow transitions, CU/LS, handheld/Tripod)
Time yourselves, you have 2 min between screening 3 & 4, then 45 mins to write your essay
Remember
1. Analysis (what Meaning is the clip saying about the groups, Stereotypes - re-enforced/challenged)
2. Examples (how they emphasise, construct difference & power - all 4 for L4)
3. Terminology (technical vocabulary)
Start with the Character Comparison
Point - AGE
Examples - CAM EDIT MES SOUND
Explanation - AGE
HERE IS THE LINK : What are the key improvement points you needed to address in your last Mock? Make sure you have prepared before you start.

Good luck!
The way youth are portrayed in the opening scenes is that they have too much time on their hands, against the adults who seem to be working hard. This stereotype is re-inforced in this scene as youth are often seen to be not working and time wasting, however the girl helps out an adult, which also breaks the stereotype. The working adults are wearing layers of clothes whilst the youthful girl is in only a t-shirt. The stereotype re-inforced here is that the female youth don't wear much clothing. The soundtrack playing in the background cannot be heard properly due to the dialogue. The edits are very slow paced and cut, until we hear a car crash off screen. Then it is a fast quick cut. The youth girl has crashed her car, and it can be assumed that she does not know how to drive which furthers a stereotype of youth being un-truthful whilst adults are honest. The girl's elderly headmaster shouts at the girl, with the stereotype being that the elderly normally shout and are disproving towards youth. The elderly man is also shot in a low angle to make him appear more imposing and more powerful in the scene against the girl who is shot in a mid/high angle shot to make her appear more vulnerable. There are relatively quick edits in the shot, reverse shot conversation scene. This is to build up the drama, and disregards stereotypes of elderly being slow. A jump cut into what we presume is the head masters office. It is fairly antique in the furniture and the tray with whisky on, re-inforcing the stereotype of elderly people liking whisky and enjoying antiques. As the adult leaves the office, he forcefully opens the door and grabs the girl asking her "you haven't sat a single exam?" in a fairly forceful tone. In the next shot, reverse shot, the girl is shown in high angle shots to once again show vulnerablity whilst the adult is show in low angle shots to show he has power over this girl. As he walks away, she shouts "I hate you" which reinforces the negative stereotype of youth throwing tantrums when they do not get their own way. Quick cut back to adults working and the soundtrack is a fairly up beat orchestral piece. This shows that adults are in between youth and the elderly as youth music is related to up beat whilst elderly music is stereotypically classical and orchestral. Quick cuts show that they are working hard but the upbeat music gives the feeling they enjoy the work. Quick cut back to the girl who is laying letters down on a bed. There is a slow orchestral piece playing to signify the teenage angst she is going through. On the bed, there is a pile of woman's magazines, this could show the stereotype that youth are in a hurry to grow up and get their own independence. The camera pans to what she was looking (a photograph on the mirror of her with some adults having a good time.) Quick cut to an elderly woman opening the door and looking for Amy. When she does not find her, she runs out the room. Quick cut back to the work where the soundtrack has stopped and an adult man begins yelling at them, questioning their actions. This inforces a stereotype of adults yelling to try and gain power over other people. The elderly woman runs up to Paul, and out of breathly tells him that Amy has run away. This could be the stereotype of elderly people panicing at the first sign of trouble, she is wearing a farmers hat which is an elderly trait.
ReplyDeleteSome good points, you need to structure your response with your evidence of the 4 areas - why is it important for her to sit exams? What does that say about dominant ideology/thinking of adults? Adults/elderly are working together as a community - they are dressed practically - traditional values? Is it challenging elderly being sprightly and active - music i lively. How does the Headmasters office fit his character and age - respect & authority? Isn't she acting in a maternal way, would we expect this of an older woman?
DeleteIf there is shot rev shot - what angles, who has more time on screen?
Good effort

In the video Youth is potrayed in many great ways.
When they are moving things around the younger out of the adults is not working as hard as the older of the group. This is kinda sterotyping that the youth of today are lazy!!
When we look at the costume you can certianyl see between the two younger youths who is more suitable to there enviroment wearing the wellingtons and famer clothing compared to the girl that is wearing a bright colour which really shows to me that she is youger youth. Youths of today wear bright colour clothing, to stand out and things have to be in the trend!!
In the video when we listen to the voices of the actors they have a different accent to the youger girl in the clip she is from liverpool (i think).
When we look at the older lady in clip she was the only one that seemed to care about the girl. This is a typically older persons trait that the care about absultly everything whatever they have done.
When we listen the sound when the younger youth was setting things up in her room the music was very slow and clame. When she was upset there wasnt any sound just her crying, and with this i could kinda feel that i was in the room feeling what she felt.
The editing when we was on the younger youth was very fast paced and moved quickly. When we was on the group working the editing was a bit fast and a bit slow in some places. I also felt that when we say the old lady when she was in the younger youth room finding she had run away there was a quick edit which for an older person that is really rare.
With the older lady it doesnt seem to me that she is lonley like most old poeple are at there age. This is a typically stereotype of an older person.
The came was used very well with many angles such as over the shoulder shoots espiacally on the youth.
Hi Danica, please copy this feedback for your tv drama blog
DeleteWhat you have done well:
1. Most points linked to expectations of age
2. Some examples of Sound, Costume, Performance
3. Some key characters compared
Improvements:
1. please look over the feedback from the last essay. It is important you focus on how you are expressing yourself in your writing - this is your priority target as you can see here: "many great ways" - "came was used very well " - this is written like you are rating it as you would a students work which is unsuitable for the exam. This is an analysis - write as if explaining to yourself 6 months ago what the Angles mean etc and why they are used.
"i could kinda feel that i was in the room feeling what she felt." - this is a good point but you must be more analytical such as 'this shows youth as isolated and unable to relate to adults/authority"
2. You must be specific with your examples, link together MES with CAM and EDIT with SOUND - "the editing when we was on the younger youth was very fast paced and moved quickly. " - this is far too general as i can't tell where this is or why its important
3. You are really lacking termnology and this is the key to linking your examples to AGE
What you could have addressed but response is too short:
a)The Headmaster
b)Why are the elderly working together & physically active = is this challenging stereotypes?
c)Camera & power - adults = authority?
d)Edit - who has more time on screen = power, importance
e)composition - who is in the frame, sizes, closeness to audience
f)location - headmasters office
g)sound - scittish folk music - tradition, lively
h)sound - the crash - why did she lie?
Please see me for support next week - it is essential we practice these skills to make greater progress
